Services for Fallen K-9 Officer Seara Burton


The public is invited to attend services to show their respect and honor Officer Burton and her sacrifice for the City of Richmond.

The viewing will be held at the Richmond City building on Sunday, September 25, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The funeral will be held on Monday, September 26, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in the Tiernan Center at Richmond High school. The doors to the Tiernan Center will open to the public at 10:00 a.m.

Following the funeral there will be a procession to Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis where Seara will be laid to rest in the section dedicated to Heroes of Public Safety.

Parking & Shuttle Locations for Sunday

We are expecting a high number of law enforcement and civilian guests from around the country. Parking at the City Building will be limited to first responders only. Additional parking and a free shuttle service is available to allow everyone to pay respects to our fallen hero and her family. Shuttles will be by school bus, anyone who cannot enter a standard school bus should use the paratransit shuttle located at Dennis Middle School (see below).

In addition, the parking lot at Dennis Middle School (222 NW 7th Street) will have accessibility parking for anyone with mobility issues. Our paratransit buses will run the shuttles between Dennis and the Richmond City Building.

Parking & Shuttle Locations for Monday

Streets surrounding Richmond High School will be closed Monday, including the G Street Bridge, to accommodate the mourners at Seara's funeral. Law enforcement vehicles will be lined up along Hub Etchison Parkway. Anyone wishing to join the procession should  head south down Hub Etchison Parkway to be directed as to where to park before the funeral begins. If you are not planning to join the procession after the service, please either park and walk, or make use of our free shuttle service.

Shuttles will begin running at 9:00 a.m. from various parking lots across Richmond. Riders will be dropped off in front of the Tiernan Center. Shuttles start back up only after the Procession leaves. It could be an hour or two after the service until you make it back to your vehicle.

Procession from Tiernan Center to Crown Hill Cemetery

The procession Richmond High School (Tiernan Center) after the funeral and travel to Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. They will take the following route

• Richmond High School to Southwest G Street
• East (Left) on Southwest G Street to South 5th Street
• North(Left) onto South 5th Street to North A Street (US 40)
• West (Left) onto North A Street (US 40) to East Main Street
• West(Right) on East Main Street to Southwest 5th Street
• South(Left) on Southwest 5th Street to US 40
• West (Right) on US 40 to Illinois Street
• North (Right) on Illinois Street to 34th Street
• West (Left) onto 34th Street into Crown Hill Cemetery

The procession will pause in front of the Richmond Police Department, located at 50 North 5th Street for the final 10-42 call. The procession will then continue under a Garrison Flag, which will be located at 1st Street and West Main Street.

The public is encouraged to join the procession to Crown Hill Cemetery. If you wish to join the procession to Crown Hill Cemetery after the funeral, before the funeral, drive your vehicle south down the Hub Etchison from National Road West to be directed where to park.

K9 Officer Seara Burton will be interred in the Heroes of Public Safety section of Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

About Seara Burton

Officer Seara Burton is a four year veteran of the Richmond Police Department. She recently joined the RPD's K-9 unit with her canine partner Brev.

On August 10th, 2022, Officer Burton suffered a serious head injury during a traffic stop after Brev found the possible presence of narcotics.

Officer Seara Burton #140/K9-2 passed away at 9:59 p.m. tonight at Reid Health surrounded by her family. She succumbed to the injury she received in a criminal act that occurred on August 10th, 2022.

Obituary for K-9 Officer Seara Burton

RICHMOND, Ind. – K-9 Officer Seara Burton, age 28, of Richmond, Indiana, died Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Reid Health, surrounded by her family, from injuries sustained in the line of duty.

Born December 17, 1993, in Richmond, Indiana, to Jennifer Miller and Scott Burton, Seara was a life-long resident of this area. She was a graduate of Northeastern High School, the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, and Vohne Liche Kennels. Seara served as a Richmond Police Officer for four years and recently achieved her dream of becoming a K-9 handler. She loved her family and was a very strong and passionate person. Seara will be remembered for her laughter, her smile, and her sense of humor. She had an incredibly positive outlook and a compassionate nature.

Survivors include her soulmate and wife, Sierra Neal; “son” and partner, K-9 Brev; Mom and “Ma”, Jennifer and Ami Miller; grandparents, Jan Statzer, David Monger, Jacque Burton, and Matt Burton; two sisters; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation for K-9 Officer Seara Burton will be from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2022, at the Richmond Municipal Building, 50 North 5th Street, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2022, in the Tiernan Center at Richmond High School, 380 Hub Etchison Parkway, Richmond, with Mayor Dave Snow officiating. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery, Heroes of Public Safety, 700 West 38th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
