Salary: $36,265.65 - $40,295.17

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work overseeing floral operations, planting and maintaining flowerbeds and trees, diagnosing and treating plant and tree diseases and pest issues, maintaining inventory and records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Landscape and Naturalist Leader. Limited supervision is exercised over seasonal and part-time personnel only.

Essential Functions

Installs new landscapes and maintains existing landscapes, including spraying, tilling, planting, mulching, watering, trimming trees; operates various trucks/equipment/tools in the performance of duties, including department trucks, riding/push mowers, weed eater, chain/power saws, gator, bobcat, edger, sprayers, pruners, hedge trimmers, tillers, fountain vacuum, goat vacuum and other hand/power tools as needed.

Supervises seasonal and part-time personnel, including planning/delegating work assignments, providing instruction on planting, fertilizing and spraying techniques and proper operation/maintenance of equipment and tools, evaluating job performance, and recommending corrective instruction as warranted.

Diagnoses plant and tree diseases and pest problems and implements treatment plans accordingly.

Orders stock as necessary, including soil, pots, flower bulbs, seeds, seedlings, and trees.

Assists in the planning and development of public-private partnerships for community beautification projects; provides public and school tours of floral operations, tree trail, and assists service organizations in volunteer work within the City floral operation.

Maintains the Memorial Tree program specifics; maintains the Composting Certification and requirements to the Indiana Department of Environment Management; works with Landscaping and Naturalist Leader to hire seasonal and part-time workers to complete all of the tasks; attends workshops and seminars as required to maintain certifications.

Facilitates educational workshops and related opportunities for the community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department policies and procedures and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA) safety policies and procedures; thorough knowledge of methods, practices, and materials used in landscaping and flower maintenance, with ability to plan, design, and maintain flowerbeds and other areas, including planting, weeding, mulching, and fertilizing; working knowledge of budget administration and ability to prepare and implement annual division budget; thorough knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to working with equipment, vehicles, and a variety of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, with ability to assure safety of self and others at all times; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; ability to supervise seasonal and part-time personnel, including planning/delegating work assignments, providing instruction on planting, fertilizing and spraying techniques and proper operation/maintenance of equipment and tools, evaluating job performance, and recommending corrective instruction as warranted; ability to operate a variety of trucks/equipment/tools as assigned; ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out verbal or written instructions; ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate projects, maintain accurate records, and prepare detailed written reports as required; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other departments, vendors, and the general public.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED and considerable experience in floral or landscaping services with management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, speaking or hearing and climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), working with explosives, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

Pesticide Applicator’s License from the Office of Indiana State Chemist, desired.

Valid driver's license in the State of Indiana.
