Major Neal VanMiddlesworth is a lifelong resident of Richmond.  He graduated from Richmond High School in 1986 and has a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies and an Associate’s degree in Business.  Major VanMiddlesworth is active in the community and RCS, serving on the boards of several organizations, including Birth to 5, Girls Inc, the YMCA, as well as coaching high school girls' soccer at Richmond High School

Major VanMiddlesworth joined the Richmond Police Department in 1997, serving many roles, including shift commander, School Resource Officer, SWAT, and Investigator, focusing on crimes against the person.  He has held several supervisory positions.

His professional development includes executive leadership, crisis intervention, incident command, verbal de-escalation, intelligence-led policing, and adolescent brain development.  He has two departmental accommodations for actions while receiving fire, including the 2018 Dennis Middle School Shooting.
