POSITION: RSD Landfill (Seasonal Helper)

DEPARTMENT: Sanitary District

DIVISION: RSD (Landfill)

WORK SCHEDULE:        9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., M-F Temporary

JOB CATEGORY: LTC (Labor, Trades, Crafts)

SALARY:         $11.00 PER HR

STATUS:                 Seasonal

FLSA STATUS:         Non-exempt

SUMMARY:

Incumbent is responsible for collecting litter from all areas of the landfill and the overall cleanliness of landfill property, building, roadways and adjacent properties.

DUTIES:

Monitors resource recovery area for proper disposal and processing of containers, including trash, yard waste, metal, and recycling containers.

Responsible for collection of litter and overall cleanliness of landfill property and buildings.

Occasionally performs duties of Customer Service Representative in his/her absence.

Provides support for scale house as needed.

Washes Landfill trucks and equipment as directed.

Ensures tires are collected and properly stored for transporting and processing. Assisting in the collection and proper storage of used oil at the landfill.

Monitors collection containers and notifies staff when collection containers are full to prevent overfilling, and keeps entire area swept and clean.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervision.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

High school diploma or GED.  

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of a medical exam and drug test.

Driver License with a demonstrated safe driving recorded is required.

Ability to work rapidly for long periods, and work on several tasks at the same time.

Working knowledge of standard office procedures and various computer software applications and programs, including MS Office Suite, and the ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations.

Must have a good mental attitude, be dependable, self-disciplined, and have a strong desire to learn and improve skills.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to operate a variety of hand and/or power tools and machinery/equipment, such as hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, air compressor, shovel, rake, mop, broom, dump truck and string trimmer.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs a variety of standard and recurring duties with work priorities and schedules primarily determined by supervisor.  Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods and procedures, with incumbent referring to supervisor for unusual matters, such as policy/procedure interpretations. Errors in work are primarily detected or prevented through procedural safeguards and complete prior instructions from supervisor.

Incumbent reports directly to Landfill Manager.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Incumbent’s duties involve moderate physical exertion, such as sitting/walking at will, walking on uneven terrain, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, close and far vision, color and depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbent performs a majority of duties outdoors and may be exposed to household hazardous waste, extreme weather conditions, fumes, and odors.
