SALARY:              $21,600.00-$24,000.00 Annually

General Laborer assists the Code Enforcement Department by performing work in a variety of fields in the abatement process.  Cuts grass, trim shrubbery, remove weeds,loads and unloads dirt, gravel, removes trash and other debris from properties and alleyways, and boards up vacant unsecured properties.  Collects and disposes of refuse in the assigned areas.

 

DUTIES

Operates push mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, rakes, shovels, sprayers, blowers and other hand tools. Use of pick-up truck, trailers, gators and lightening loader. 

Cuts grass and weeds with mowers and weed eaters.  Trim shrubbery and clears debris from alleyways. Operates, chain saws, loppers and other equipment. 

Operates a variety of hand tools and power equipment. 

Loads and unloads dirt, gravel and all other debris. 

Removal and disposal of hazardous materials, bed bugs, biting insects, mouse droppings.Exposure to hypodermic needles may lead to implementing third party safety protocols. 

Loads and disposes of household trash and other debris. 

Cleans,maintains and services equipment and tools.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Must be at least 18 years of age. 

Possession of a valid Indiana Driver’s License and demonstrated safe driving record. Valid Commercial Drivers’ License required or the ability to obtain CDL within six (6) months of hire. 

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment. 

Working knowledge of OSHA standards. 

Ability to communicate effectively orally with co-workers, contractors, homeowners,engineers, other government units, merchants, and members of the general public. Must be sensitive to ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities. 

Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.  

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct. 

Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons. 

Ability to occasionally work extended, weekend, and evening hours, and periodically travel out of town, sometimes overnight. 

 

RESPONSIBILITY: 

Incumbent applies standardized department policies and procedures to individual cases for which desired results are clearly specified. Incumbent refers unprecedented situations to supervisor. Work is periodically reviewed for technical accuracy and adherence to guidelines.

 

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS: 

Incumbent requires regular contact, writing co-workers, contractors, homeowners, engineers, other government units, merchants, and members of the general public for the purposes of receiving instruction. 

Incumbent reports directly to the Crew Leader.

 

PHYSICAL EFFORT & WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbent’s duties may involve continuous physical exertion, driving, lifting/carrying objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, crouching/kneeling,reaching, sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, close/far vision, depth perception, hearing sounds/communication and handling/grasping/fingering objects.  

Incumbent performs a majority of duties outdoors and is frequently exposed to normal hazards associated with interior and exterior maintenance, including heavy machinery,excessive noise, traffic, moving parts, toxic chemicals, dust, dirt, fumes,slippery surfaces, and wet/icy conditions. Incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing and/or equipment.  Incumbent’s duties may also involve removal and disposal of hazardous materials, bed bugs, biting insects, mouse droppings.Exposure to hypodermic needles may lead to implementing third party safety protocols.
