Incumbent serves as Maintenance Laborer for the Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for performing general upkeep and maintenance at City parks, facilities and grounds.

 

DUTIES: 

Maintains buildings, grounds, mowing, weed eating, pruning,raking, trimming/cutting shrubs, removing trash and debris. 

May need to clean and collects trash in park facilities,including shelters and rental buildings. 

Regularly operates various trucks/equipment/tools in the performance of duties, including  tractors, mowers, weed eaters, hedgers,trimmers, pruners, leaf blower,  paint sprayers, gator, and other hand/power tools as needed. 

Maintains department trucks, tractors and equipment,including checking fluids and other preventative maintenance as needed.  

Completes and files maintenance records and maintains equipment service records as required. 

Attends department meetings as assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

High school diploma or GED. 

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department policies and procedures and applicable OHSA safety policies and procedures. 

Working knowledge of methods, practices, and materials used in grounds and facility maintenance,with ability to maintain park grounds and complete repairs on park facilities and equipment as needed

Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of a medical exam and a drug test. 

Ability to operate a variety of trucks/equipment, tractors, mowers, weed eaters, hedgers, trimmers,pruners, tiller, edger, leaf blower,  power drills, paint sprayer, gator, and other hand/power tools as needed. 

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug free workplace, and personal conduct. 

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, often under time pressure, and on several tasks at the same time. 

Ability to occasionally work flexible hours and occasionally respond to emergency situations as needed.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

   

RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs specific park ground and building repair/maintenance duties.

Incumbent reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent.

 

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Incumbent's duties may involve continuous physical exertion, driving for long periods of time,lifting/carrying objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, crouching/kneeling, reaching, sitting/walking at will,standing/walking for long periods of time, walking on uneven terrain, close/far vision, depth perception, hearing sounds/communication and handling/grasping/fingering objects.

  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbent performs a majority of duties outdoors and is frequently exposed to normal hazards associated with park/building maintenance, including heavy machinery, excessive noise, traffic, moving parts, toxic chemicals, dust, dirt, fumes, slippery surfaces, working in high places, such as bucket trucks, extreme temperatures and wet/cold/icy conditions. Incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing and/or equipment.  In responding to emergency situations, incumbent may be exposed to downed power lines and/or fallen trees.  Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.  Incumbent occasionally works flexible hours and occasionally responds to emergency situations as needed.
