Part-Time Paramedic/EMT Requirements

Applicant must be:

  1. State Certified as a Paramedic or EMT
  2. Pass background checks or other criteria as outlined below

Testing

To go through the RFD’s hiring process, all applicants complete a series of tests. As you pass each test, you will be informed of the next phase and time schedule. For each test, arrive no later than 30 minutes before its scheduled start time and show a valid driver’s license. Failure to do so can result in disqualification.

Background Check Phase. You will be required to go through a complete background investigation. This covers your criminal and driving history.  The RFD will request and receive a criminal background check from the city. It is your responsibility to provide the RFD with a county background check (free document from Wayne County) as well as your driving record (available online or the local BMV).

Voicestress Test Phase.  Once the RFD receives the results of your voice stress test, it is at the discretion of the RFD to determine if you move on to the next phase.

Candidate’s Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Phase. The CPAT is a timed agility test that measures your upper body strength and endurance. If you fail to meet the test’s time standards, you will not pass. Dress in comfortable workout clothes(no shorts) and tennis shoes. The test is strenuous, so if you have had a recent illness or surgery, are pregnant, or are taking medicine, ask your doctor for a note that says you can participate.  This resource will help you prepare for the CPAT.

Written Test Phase. This phase takes about 3 ½ hours to complete and covers areas such as basic math, reading comprehension, memorization, and problem solving. The aerial climb will be held the same day as the written test (weather permitting)and is pass or fail. The aerial climb requires you to climb up and down a ladder. Dress in comfortable workout clothes (no shorts) and tennis shoes; a pair of gloves will be provided by the RFD.

Oral Interview Phase. This phase takes approximately 30-40 minutes. You will sit before a board of people who will ask you questions and grade your response. Dress as if you were going to a job interview.

Request for your acceptance in the Indiana Public Employee's Retirement Fund (PERF) Phase. The mental and medical exams show if you are mentally and physically able to perform the job of a firefighter. The mental exam takes about two hours to complete. It is followed by an interview with a psychologist. The medical exam is a complete physical that includes body fat, hearing/vision, treadmill, blood, and urine tests. When done, the doctors give their recommendations to the RFD.

Once you have successfully passed the above mentioned phases and tests, you will be notified by mail that you may be given a conditional offer of employment.
